Yesterday in Palm Desert, CA two men shot and killed each other after their babymamas female companions got into a fight in a Toys R Us. If you want to read about it click here.

A 34 year old man was killed yesterday after being trampled by the more than 2,000 customers fighting to get into a NYC Walmart. He was a WalMart employee who was attempting to control the crowd. If you want to read about it click here.

A woman in Farmingdale, NY was trampled by overeager customers in a Walmart. She had minor injuries and finished her shopping before she filed a police report. She probably wanted to make sure she still got that Black Friday bargain!

I could go on and on with the crazy stories I found on the news this morning. But really this quote from the NYC WalMart story sums up the insane craziness that has come over some American shoppers:

Kimberly Cribbs, who witnessed the stampede, said shoppers were acting like "savages."

"When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling `I've been on line since yesterday morning,'" she said. "They kept shopping."

Inflation

I usually give each of the boys $20 to spend on each other for Christmas. This year we are going to have Dylon & Bethany with us for the holidays. If I give each kid $20 to spend on each of the other kids I won't spend $40 this year I will spend $240. That is what I call inflation!!

What is it like ...

... to live in a house without boys and without pets? Now mind you, I wouldn't give it up for the world ... but last night as I was on my hands and knees cleaning urine soaked dog and cat hair out from behind the toilet I did have a moment during which I wondered what life in a house full of girls and devoid of pets might be like.

Another Fundraiser

Those of you who know me well know that I never, ever push the fundraisers. I have been known to send a note to school with the boys that says something like, "Dear Mrs. Teacher, Chase/Kenny will not be participating in this fundraiser. Please pass this $10 donation along to the PTA. Thanks." I have also been known to tell my kids, "Oh those Rocket Bouncy House Dollar Store Prize Kid Luring Waste of Educational Time Parties are stupid! If we skip this fundraiser I will take you to Mr. Gatti's on the night all of the kids at school go to that stupid party!" It works every time.
I got my pointsetta from the last fundraiser today and I have to say it is the most beautiful pointsetta I have ever bought! I definitely got my $12 worth. And I did let Chase sell them to a couple of neighbors. His band director asked that each student try to sell five. I figured it wouldn't be terrible to buy one and let him sell four to the neighbors. He spent approximately three minutes on this task. Apparently pointsettas are pretty popular. Or maybe the neighbors appreciate the fact that we've lived here two years and this is the first time I've let him go selling stuff at their doorsteps.
Well, they don't know what they are missing ... today we got the COOKIE DOUGH fundraiser. To me, this is the holy grail of fundraisers. This stuff is so good! I will likely buy enough to cover the quota his school has shoved down his throat so I am sure I won't be sending notes or going to Mr. Gatti's this time.
Why am I telling you all of this? I want to share my good fortune with you. If you are one of our local friends and you want something absolutely delicious to spend your Christmas vacation with (orders come in on the 18th of December), give me a call and I'll hook you up faster than a crack dealer on a street corner in Houston.

There is a Cow Skull ...

in my yard!

Do y'all remember this posting? (Yes, I used y'all ... it just seems appropriate for someone who lives in Texas and has a cow skull in her yard) Apparently one day about two months ago Brian took the boys back to the site of the deadcowkickingepisode that still gives me nightmares. They brought home the skull of the cow that saved me $6.87 at Petsmart. They soaked it in bleach and left it out in the sun to ... to ... to what ... dry? cure? get ready for display? Who knows what the reason was?!? I just know that I found it last week in an area around the side of the house where Brian parks his truck and I rarely venture. When he came home this weekend to visit I asked him what his plans were. He and the boys checked out the skull, declared it ready for display, and attempted to place it in my ivy and flowers out front. Obviously, we had different opinions about where it should go. I voted for the Twin Buttes so that the skull could be reunited with the rest of the cow's skeleton. The boys voted for the front yard where all of the neighbors could see it and feel green with envy. Apparently we have compromised because now it is in the backyard next to my little tree. I have a feeling I am going to have to keep a close eye on my two boys and their troublesome dad. I wouldn't be surprised to drive up to the house one day and see it sitting out front, being proudly displayed like the trophy they think it is. God help me, I need a daughter!

Last weekend there was a small dog show here. They say everything is bigger in Texas, but they obviously don't live in the same city we live in. There were two rings and the entire thing lasted about an hour. Kenny showed PJ in a costume contest and Chase took a junior handler class to learn some techniques for showing dogs.


PJ won first prize for the cutest costume.


And Chase worked on his showing techniques so that he is prepared in the spring when he shows my mom's bulldogs again.

It was a pretty fun morning. Well, unless you ask the little 8 pound dog that had to wear 5 lb of fake grapes for a costume. She might not tell you the same thing!

Use it or Lose it

My TExES exam is coming up soon. It is one of the three teacher certification exams I will be taking between now and March '09. One of three $120 tests that I need to pass to be able to teach in Texas. Well, technically only two of them are necessary, but I would really like to take & pass the third test so that I can teach K-8th grade instead of K-4th grade. As I mentioned here, there is a program that will pay for my exams. I am very happy about that. Especially because I can spend up to $600 on exams. That means if I have to take one of them twice, it won't cost me an extra $120. Anyway, my first exam covers the ECH-grade 4 content areas. 40% of my exam is language arts/reading, 15% is math, 15% is science, 15% is social studies, and the remaining 15% covers art, music, physical education, and health. I have been studying a little bit here and there. Last night I studied the music section of my study guide. I used to be in band. I played the flute from 4th to 12th grade. I played the piano the first time I went to college (back in the dark ages). I can't sing, but I was musically inclined. As I was studying last night I realized I was not in a good place for that part of my test. I have forgotten SO MUCH! Another big worry: the social studies area. It is almost all Texas history. Go figure. One page of my study guide is dedicated to WWI, WWII, and the Vietnam War. 17 pages are dedicated to Texas' history and the Alamo. In this case, I haven't forgotten anything ... I never knew it in the first place. Let's move on the math. I would have called myself a math whiz in high school. Now I can't do Chase's homework. I took all except one of my college math classes in the early 90's. I took one last summer. While I was on vacation. With my laptop open on the side of the desk while I was taking the tests on the desktop. Yup, I am in trouble. Good thing I have $600 to spend. I might need every single dollar of it!
